Administration Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
